This second installment of our Healing Warriors series highlights five inspirational stories that bring positivity and gratefulness into a time of distress and difficulty. These stories are told by our employees who are out in the field, working hard to make a difference, including our:
- Care coordinators (clinical and nonclinical), who are staffing our COVID-19 Patient Information Line service centers
- Corporate health consultants, who are working to unite local businesses with SCP’s partner hospitals to keep communities as safe and healthy as possible
- Regional directors, who are helping SCP partner hospitals navigate the specific challenges that their areas are facing
At SCP Health, collaboration has always been one of our core values—and these stories demonstrate how incredibly important that foundation has been in this time of crisis.
“I got a call from a man who was stranded several states away from home. He had a chronic autoimmune disorder and couldn’t return home to get the medicine he needed. His insurance company told him to find a doctor where was at now, so he called us for help since he didn’t know the area well. I was able to get him in for an appointment with an internal medicine doctor in under a week. I am so glad I was able to help him, and he was very thankful!“

“Today, I got a call from a very worried mother. She told me her daughter is in her third trimester, has waited several weeks for her COVID-19 test results, and couldn’t get in touch with anyone to discuss the issue. Understanding her fear, I helped guide her through the process of getting her daughter to contact medical records and log in to her patient portal. She called back in less than 30 minutes to tell me that they were finally able to get their results and her daughter had tested negative. She sounded so much brighter and happier, and she thanked me. She said, “we would not have known if it weren’t for you, we were so worried.” This filled my heart because I feel like our call line is giving people relief and some type of comfort.”

“This morning, I received a call from a lady who was trying to set up her patient portal so she could easily access her information and results. She was having trouble setting up an account, so I made sure she was on the right website, emailed her the instructions, and gave her the help line number to call for further assistance. She was very appreciative!”

“One of my co-workers started making headbands for the medical staff at my hospital because constantly wearing masks has been really hurting their ears. When she told this story to a few of the nursing homes she works with, they asked me if she could make 500 headbands for them as well—and she was happy to! It’s so nice to see people I work with using their unique skills to help make this hard situation a little better.”

“Overnight, I got a call from a woman with symptoms similar to COVID-19. Her employer wanted to see negative test results before allowing her to return to work—but she didn’t have a primary care provider and was turned away at the local urgent care because she didn’t have a test order. I tried calling clinicians in the community, but unfortunately none had the capacity to test new patients. Thankfully, one of my colleagues heard what was going on and instantly started helping. She knew a contact at the local hospital who was able to quickly get my caller an order to be tested at the urgent care. My caller was very thankful for the support that we provided—and I am so grateful that I work with people who constantly go above and beyond for the good of others.”
