There are several barriers that may prevent patients from being able to access health services timely. Characteristics such as age, ethnicity, economic resources, gender, and geography play significant factors. Clinicians have a responsibility to help reduce these disparities with practical steps to identify and overcome barriers.

Get to Know Your Patients Personally

Ask questions beyond their symptoms

Do they have reliable transportation?
Are they stressed?
What does their daily nutrition look like?
Do they have secure access to meals?
What job, family, or other life complications might affect care?

Increase Your Cultural Competency

Actively monitor your implicit biases and seek to learn more about your patients’ needs

What languages do your patients speak?
What cultural nuances do you not understand?
Are there religious considerations?
How can you show respect and understanding of your patients’ beliefs and behaviors?

Identify Outside Resources

Partner with outside organizations to maximize your resources

Do you need language translation support?
Are you aware of all avenues for financial assistance?
Does a non-profit or other entity provide transportation near your facility?
Have you involved government resources to help increase equitable access to care?

Communicate Clearly

Prioritize conveying your understanding and clarify next steps

Did you acknowledge your patient’s concerns?
Did you use clear and simple language to explain diagnosis and treatment?
Are your patients aware of what to do next?
Did you offer available follow-up services?
